This project involved designing and developing a basic single page web application aimed at self employed individuals in the UK who were looking to calculate approximately how much Income Tax, National Insurance etc. they would have to pay based on their income and expense figures.

Web Site Design

The web site design focused on:

• Semantic coding and content to enhance search engine rankings
• Easy to read results, with additional information available when requested
• Focus on advertisements to help increase site revenue

The design focused on a simple, easy to use application, alongside striking advertising space to increase site revenue.

Web Site Development

Harmony provides the framework for writing the calculations system, which is easily extensible into future tax years. It can also cache (save) results to automatically reproduce them if the same figures are re-entered, therefore increasing page load times.

As with all work, the design was coded in XHTML and CSS, using progressive enhancements in CSS and Javascript for newer web browsers, whilst ensuring legacy web browsers could still browse and view the web site’s information.
